Obsidian is a naturally occurring glass formed from volcanic lava that has been used since the Stone Age to make weapons such as arrowheads, spears and blades. Its ability to be carved and polished made it popular for ritual tools, including the black mirror which is commonly used in scrying. It is therefore a stone of protection, truth and reflection. It lends spiritual grounding during psychic work and shields against negativity. Black obsidian was thought by many ancient cultures to be a portal to other realms and means of spirit communication, thus stimulating the gift of prophecy. It can bring problems to the surface, making it useful for asking questions, seeking answers and confronting weaknesses. It also aids the release of negative energy and unhealthy attachments, addictions or people. It requires regular cleansing due to smog built up in psychic work and healing.
